Jaume Plensa was asked to develop a permanent project for the city of Herning as part of the Socle du Monde. After visits to the city and several conversations Plensa decided to place 21 aluminium doors in Herning with text from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As statement he wrote the following:
HERNING’S DOORS
(Universal Declaration of Human Rights)
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is one of the most beautiful and emotional poems ever written.
His extraordinary poetic power interrogates us.
Each article is a hand knocking on the door of our heart.
This text opens the door of our mind to share with other people our dreams, our culture, our wealth and our hope.
A door towards tolerance and respect is a light illuminating the faces of so many women and men forgotten by society.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the key. Let's open the door!
